Chapter Twelve

The new chief bridesmaid's dress was now a pale powder blue shade that enthralled Tanya, but did not especially enthrall the girl who would be wearing it — who much preferred the more electric shade she had originally chosen. Another battle of bridal party versus big sponsors ended with the battle won by the editorial team's 'divine' color match, with Leila admitting it was elegant.

I had matched the ribbons and the blue embroidered pattern of the napkins perfectly to the new shade, as it happens, so it was time to confirm that order with the linens provider, who was only too happy to oblige. The bluebells in the bouquet did look stunning next to it, the wedding planner in me had to admit — even if the rest of me wanted more of Leila and less of the feature writer in the process.

Dinah had emailed me with news that she had been working hard on her design, so I decided since I was leaving work early the following evening, that would be a perfect time to stop by and see her progress.

"Coming with?" I asked Kitty, as I strapped Lottie into her push chair. Kitty had been putting away some stray toys that Tige had hidden beneath our desk.

"Course," said Kitty. "I'm not missing an opportunity to taste her latest." She slipped her bag over her shoulder and took Tige's hand, drawing the toddler up, then lifting her.

The new window scene at Cups and Cakes depicted chocolate biscuit cottages in lacy icing, and rustic trees made of leaf-shaped cookies of tapered sizes, stacked together. That was for the grownups — for kids, the upper tiers boasted a row of molten chocolate mini cakes, decorated like tiny volcanoes with little candy glass flames.

"Isn't it sweet?" said Dinah. "I thought it turned out quite charming. I had an inspiration yesterday when I saw the poster for some disaster movie in the secondhand media shop's window. "I thought to myself, why not make the cakes the same way?"

She folded a cake box and slipped in a slice of carrot cake. "The glaze is milk chocolate, with a little dusting of cocoa powder along the top — if chocolate is so popular these days in the village, I might as well join the band and help fill the need."

"I love it, but I hope the wedding cake design is a teeny bit more formal," I teased.

"Don't be the pinching goose in the garden," she scolded, in one of her more colorful colloquialisms. "Of course I made a proper cake for that."

We followed her through to the kitchen, where the new sample was waiting under a glass cake dome. It was only the topmost layer, like the one that would become the sample, only a sketch of the full-size version lay next to it.

"I haven't finished the complete design, but I think a china-like pattern on the outside of the fondant — something clean and elegant in precision — will do," she said. "A bit of blue in it, obviously.
